Making Difference

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 interconnected goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint to achieve better and more sustainable future for all. These goals address a wide range of global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. The SDGs aim to balance the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

Amiha is making significant strides in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our commitment to sustainable and responsible agribusiness practices directly impacts several SDGs. Out of the 17 SDGs, Amiha's efforts are aligned with 13 goals, covering 76% of the SDGs. Here are some key ways in which Amiha's efforts align with and support these global goals:

Regenerative Agriculture

REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

A conservative and rehabilitation approach to farming systems. Not a specific practice itself, it is a judicious mix of sustainable agriculture techniques which include recycling farm waste, decreased  greenhouse gases (GHGs) , carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling. Being a part of FARM, a NGO based out of Ahmedabad, we are excited to see such great transformation in our agriculture practices. We do not limit ourselves to the concept of organic products but go beyond it, with this innovative yet sustainable approach of Regenerative agriculture.

Speaking on the evolution of Regenerative Agriculture, it may be said that the concept was introduced in the early 1980s. It, however, went out of vogue in the late 1980’s until a white paper in 2014 was released titled "Regenerative Organic Agriculture and Climate Change" by The Rodale Institute (a non-profit organization that supports research in organic farming. It was founded in Emmaus, Pennsylvania in 1947 by J.I. Rodale, an organic living entrepreneur)

These practices have existed for centuries, but the term itself has only been around for some decades, and as of late, has increasingly shown up in academic research since the early to mid-2010s in the fields of environmental science, plant science, and ecology.

At Amiha, we initiated the concept of regenerative agriculture in cotton farming, for the 2020/2021 growing season in our four current operative states: Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha. From new regenerative agriculture certifications to sourcing commitments from big brands, the concept is gaining good ground and huge following.

While we recognize the importance of Regenerative agricultural practices in farming, we can contribute to enhancing soil fertility, improving yields, protecting livelihoods and adapting to the backlash of climate change.

Our approach purports to lead towards a continuous improvement in farming practices and look forward to evolving the climate smart and sustainable agriculture practices. We are currently in the process of achieving the maximum SDG targets and to boost international trade in various areas.

Amiha is committed to restoring the purity of the environment through organic and regenerative agriculture.

"Seeds of Sustainability: A Cotton Farmer's Journey"

Farmer First Story

In the heart of the cotton belt, where golden fields stretch as far as the eye can see, there is a remarkable woman named Amina who has carved a niche for herself as a sustainable cotton farmer. Her story is one of resilience, determination, and a deep-rooted commitment to not only nurturing her cotton crops but also her family's future.

Amina's day begins before the sun graces the horizon. She wakes up to the chirping of birds, eager to embrace another day on her family's cotton farm. As she steps out of her modest farmhouse, she is greeted by the sight of cotton plants swaying gently in the morning breeze. These cotton plants are more than just a source of livelihood; they are a testament to her dedication to sustainable farming practices.

With a wide-brimmed hat shading her face from the sun's relentless rays, Amina meticulously inspects her cotton plants. Instead of relying on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, she has chosen the path of sustainability. She practices crop rotation and intercropping, using natural pest control methods and organic fertilizers. Amina firmly believes that taking care of the land ensures the land takes care of her.

Amina's commitment to sustainability goes beyond her farming practices. She has embraced rainwater harvesting to minimize water wastage and invested in solar panels to power her irrigation systems. These efforts not only reduce her environmental footprint but also decrease the farm's operational costs, contributing to her financial stability.

However, Amina's responsibilities extend far beyond the cotton fields. As a mother of three bright children, she understands that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Amina's face lights up when she talks about her children, and she proudly shares their dreams. She knows that their dreams are intertwined with the cotton she cultivates.

Amina's cotton farm has become her classroom, where she imparts valuable life lessons to her children. They learn about hard work, patience, and the importance of sustainable living from their mother. As the cotton season progresses, Amina's children join her in the fields after school, their hands covered in soil, and their hearts filled with ambition.

A Fresh Start: From Loss to Natural Farming

Farmer Second Story

In a remote village nestled between rolling hills and lush greenery, there lived a farmer named Raj. For generations, his family had tilled the land, but fate had dealt them a cruel blow in recent times. Due to mounting debts and unfavourable circumstances, Raj had lost his ancestral farmland, leaving his family in a state of despair.

However, Raj was not one to be defeated easily. He had always had a deep connection with the earth, a love for the soil that ran through his veins. With the support of his family, he decided it was time for a fresh start. He had heard stories of natural farming, a sustainable and organic approach that was gaining popularity in the region. Determined to make a living from the land once more, he embarked on a journey of renewal.

Raj began by attending workshops and seeking guidance from experts in natural farming techniques. He learned about the importance of biodiversity, soil health, and minimal intervention in agriculture. Armed with this knowledge, he chose a small piece of land that he could afford to lease, and there, he started his experiment with natural farming.

Instead of relying on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, Raj opted for composting, cover cropping, and natural pest control methods. He planted a diverse range of crops, creating a harmonious ecosystem on his small plot of land. The transformation was slow, but he watched with hope as the soil regained its vitality, and the land seemed to breathe once more.

The community, initially skeptical of Raj's unconventional approach, soon became intrigued by the vibrant colors of his crops and the absence of chemicals in his fields. Raj was not only rejuvenating the land, but he was also rekindling hope among his fellow farmers
