Sustainable Rice

Rice is one of the world’s staple cereals, along with wheat and maize.
Over three billion people across the globe eat rice every day.

Around 97 per cent of rice is grown in Asian countries. It has been estimated that by 2050, the annual global demand for maize, rice and wheat will reach almost 3.3 billion tons. According to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), rice production needs to increase by 25 per cent in the next 25 years to meet global demands.

Why Sustainable Rice?

why-sustainable-rice

Though a staple crop in many countries, rice production is facing the impact of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods that’s why rice farmers are among those most vulnerable to climate change. In India and Bangladesh alone, more than 5 million hectares of rice fields are flooded during most planting seasons.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), rice is critical to global food security. As we face the worst effects of climate change, the key to improving food security in developing countries lies in sustainable rice production.

Switching to sustainable practices in rice cultivation will boost farmers’ incomes, reduce water use and cut methane emissions from flooded rice fields which contribute to climate change. Still there is limited awareness of how sustainable rice can be grown. Therefore, we are increasing our reach to train and facilitate farmers to grow different varieties of rice organically.
